Applications run from 9 November to 15 January
Applications for an Essex primary Reception place starting in September 2027 open on 9 November 2026 and close on 15 January 2027. The timetable applies to families living in the Essex County Council administrative area; it is not a single opening date for every council in England or across the UK.
Parents should read the council’s primary admissions booklet and check the priority admission catchment schools before submitting preferences through the Essex Education portal.
Check that this is the right application route
This round is for children due to start Reception in September 2027. Essex also opens applications for junior Year 3 places on the same dates where the child is moving from an infant school, but most children already attending an all-through primary school do not need a separate Year 3 application.
A child who already attends primary school and needs to move during the school year follows the council’s separate changing-school process. Families should not use the Reception application as an in-year transfer form.
Preferences and changes after the deadline
Families can review the admissions booklet and catchment information before choosing schools. Online preferences cannot be changed after the closing date. If the family moves home, the council asks parents to contact the School Admissions Team and provide evidence of the new address.
Submitting by the deadline does not guarantee a particular school. Applications received after 15 January are treated as late and may reduce the chance of receiving a preferred place.
Offer day is 16 April 2027
Online applicants are due to receive an email with the school offer on 16 April 2027 and can view the allocation in their portal account from that date. The offer is the formal allocation stage; the application confirmation is not itself a school place.
Families needing help can contact the Essex School Admissions Team. They should keep their application record and monitor the email address linked to the portal.
