Choose a question with two workable answers

Try this at the kitchen table: if the school had one spare room, should it become a quiet reading space or somewhere to play games at lunchtime? Give everyone a minute to think. Younger children can draw their idea or ask someone to read it aloud. This is an informal family activity inspired by UK Parliament Week.

Give everyone a turn before the vote

Ask each person for one reason, then invite a question. “Who would use the room on a rainy day?” opens up more discussion than simply asking who agrees. An adult can chair the first round and invite a child to chair the next. Use folded paper ballots if the children would like to vote privately.

Ask what happens to the losing idea

Count the votes together. Before announcing a decision, invite someone to explain the strongest point they heard from the other side. Perhaps the games group suggested a quieter corner that both groups would enjoy. Finish by recording one thing the family would want to find out before making a real decision.
