Start with your school’s assigned regional

Registration for the 2027 National Science Bowl regional competitions opened on October 5, 2026. The Department of Energy directs schools to the event assigned to their location; choosing any convenient regional is not the process. Coaches first preregister the school, then wait for regional approval before building their teams. Availability matters, so an application alone should not be presented to families as a confirmed place.

Put November 23 on the team calendar

Under the published 2027 process, schools with approved preregistration must submit Team 1 by November 23, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. local time to retain their reserved space. Required parental forms must be completed before submission. Schools approved after that date are not guaranteed a place. Read the regional page and current rules as well: local arrangements and the final event-registration cutoff still matter.

Use the Bay Area dates as a regional example

SLAC lists its middle-school competition for February 6, 2027, and its high-school competition for February 27. These are SLAC regional dates, not a national timetable for every school. A useful planning note for families can separate three items: the registration action due now, the provisional preparation schedule and the confirmed competition date. Keep student details and consent documents in the official registration process, rather than a shared class chat.

Make the first practice welcoming

For a first meeting, try a short set of questions across several subjects and let students explain how they reached an answer. This is an editorial suggestion, not an official selection procedure. Invite quieter students to contribute and agree how the school will choose its final team fairly. Before sending an invitation, the teacher can confirm meeting space, supervision, travel arrangements and any costs with the school. A simple interest form should not be confused with official competition registration; tell families exactly which stage the school has reached.
