Start with the local opportunity
North Carolina’s governor has proclaimed November 2026 Family Engagement Month. This is a state proclamation, not a single nationwide school calendar. Check your district or school newsletter for local activities. Families elsewhere can use the occasion to ask how they can contribute in a way that fits their work hours, language and availability.
Offer a task with a clear finish
A PTA or PTO volunteer might replace a general request for help with a specific invitation: “Could you check the supply list from home by Thursday?” State who to contact and how long the task is expected to take. Offer an alternative for families who cannot attend during the school day. Confirm any classroom visit or volunteer requirements with the school before promising a place.
Make the reply useful
After an activity, ask one concrete question: “What would make it easier for your family to join next time?” A response about timing or unclear directions can lead to a manageable change. Share the confirmed next step through the school’s usual channel. Avoid posting which families did not take part or suggesting that attendance at an event measures how much a parent cares. Reading together, asking about a lesson and staying in contact with a teacher are also ways to be involved.
